Evaluate Your Students Using the Assessment Tools (PDF file)

I developed this handout for faculty at CSU, Sacramento who were using the current LMS (Learning Management System) to help teach their class. The document could be referenced on its own or used as a supplement to faculty development workshops.

NOTE: The template used for this handout was developed by the department that I worked for.

Flashlight How-To Documents (PDF file)

This handout was developed as a how-to document for campus @ CSU, Sacramento.

NOTE: The template used for some of these handouts was developed by the department that I worked for.

PDF Accessibility: Creating Accessible PDF Documents (PDF file)

Published in collaboration with Cryssel Vera and Melissa Repa at CSU, Sacramento, this handout became the basis for a series of guides and video tutorials that we helped produce for the Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) of the California State University.

The material we developed was adopted by the US Department of Education.

Course Design & Development

Computer Science 8s (WebCT)

I taught this online course from Fall 2002 to Spring 2006 (two semesters per academic year), as a part-time lecturer. Soon after inheriting it, I redesigned the content and re-structured the course elements for the Learning Management System (LMS) that was being used at the university. Along with the re-designed content, I’ve included a screenshot and a link to the original content.

Nursing 12 (WebCT)

I worked with the instructor of this course to completely re-design it. A common complaint from students was the inability to locate course material, so the first thing we tackled was the organization of the course. Material was re-organized into Learning Modules and appropriate folders. An online course introduction was created. Quizzes & exam were re-organized. We also started to work on the aesthetics of the course.

EDS 51 (Blackboard)

Overall, this course represents the most time-consuming and challenging design project that I’ve worked on. Originally delivered 100% in-class, the new design was for a class that was to be delivered 100% online, by a teacher new to the world of online instruction. Much of the content/design was built from the ground-up, with the exception of lesson content, which was created by another instructor. Videos were produced in collaboration with another department on campus, and incorporated into the course design. This online course was designed in Blackboard.

eLearning Program Development

Discussion Board: Online Discussion for Blended Learning (PDF file)

This “best practices” handout for online discussions was developed for faculty at CSU, Sacramento. This document was used during an eLearning development workshop I co-facilitated for the Center for Teaching & Learning at CSU, Sacramento. A few months later, I developed a Discussion Board Guidelines [template] for our faculty, to accompany the handout.

NOTE: The template used for this handout was developed by the department that I worked for.

Cheat Sheet for Objectives (PDF file)

This handout was developed as a supplement for a hybrid course design session I helped design & facilitate. The session was part of an 8-part eLearning program on hybrid course design that I developed with a team of other program developers at CSU, Sacramento.

Hybrid Course Re-Design Process Outline (PDF file)

As part of the aforementioned eLearning program at CSU, Sacramento, I developed this process outline in collaboration with two other eLearning program developers. This process outline was used to help guide program development throughout the sessions that were delivered (a total of 8 sessions).

Feedback

Computer Science 8 Course, Students Feedback

I taught this online course from Fall 2002 to Spring 2006 (two semesters per academic year), as a part-time lecturer.

Fall 2003
” When I needed assistance the instructor was available to answer my questions. Communication with her was excellent. I was able to complete the course work around my work and school schedule. Largly because of my positive experience this semester with this distance education course, I have signed up for another course next semester…”

Fall 2005
“This is my 4th WebCT class and, by far, the best taught!”

“It actually made me almost win a bet with my boyfriend – he thought I wouldn’t ever learn this stuff :)”

“I thoroughly enjoyed this class. It gave me information on the many uses and things available on the Internet…”

“Monica Range is a great teacher who patiently took time to answer many questions I had during the semester.”

“… I loved Ms. Range. She was patient to a fault and most accommodating. She is the best distance educator I have ever had (are you reading this, UC Davis Extension???). Her committment to the class was obvious. I also respect her technical skills.”

Faculty Development Workshops, Participant Feedback

In my career as a consultant and instructional designer, I’ve designed and facilitated the following workshops: Learning Management System course development (variety of topics & tools), HTML, Web Design, Dreamweaver (facilitated only), Adobe Acrobat (introduction, advanced topics), PDF accessibility, Flashlight (survey software), and various other sessions related to eLearning.

Adobe Acrobat Introduction [Workshop]
“Don’t attempt Adobe Acrobat without first attending this class! You will learn a lot that will save you time in the future.”

“This was a good workshop. I’m pretty technology savvy, so I was able to keep up with the instructor…even though all of the information was new.”

“Monica was a GREAT teacher.”

PDF Accessibility Training [CSU training]
“I would like to thank you for your knowledge and creating the video tutorials for learning how to make pdf files accessible. After reviewing the videos, I was able to make my pdf files accessible!! The videos are very informative and easy to follow – especially for a beginner like me.” (NOTE: This training was a collaborative effort, see http://teachingcommons.cdl.edu/access/docs_multi/pdfaccess.shtml)
